Previous activities - South Baltic Arc

SEBco is a follow-up project of the BSR INTERREG IIIB project "South Baltic Arc", which was completed in May 2005 and was likewise led by the Ministry for Transport, Building and Regional Development Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (Germany).

"South Baltic Arc" established an intensive transnational cooperation within the South East Baltic Sea Region, involving partners from Germany, Poland, Russia, Latvia and Lithuania. Experiences and developed strategies as well as the well-established network of experts and regional stakeholders from "South Baltic Arc" are the basis for the work in SEBco.

The project had two main objectives,

  • strengthening cooperation between regional stakeholders in the South Baltic Arc region in order to enhance regional development and
  • reducing welfare disparities.

"South Baltic Arc" combined transnational spatial planning with the implementation of regional sub-projects. The activities were centred around the transnational, coast-parallel transport corridor (road and rail) "Via Hanseatica":

  • At the transnational level the focus lay on the harmonization of spatial development strategies and concepts among the countries and regions in the South Baltic Arc. Furthermore, proposals for the improvement of the transport infrastructure in the "Via Hanseatica" corridor were elaborated.
  • Parallel to this, the project prepared concrete regional development measures for the benefit of sub-regions in the South Baltic Arc (e.g. developing large business sites along the Via Hanseatica in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern). The measures made use of the improvement of the transport infrastructure and the resulting advanced accessibility.
