Work package 3: Accessibility of medium-sized cities

Why we do it

Since 1990, passenger transport has shifted from rail to road especially in former socialist countries. This endangers the viability of existing secondary railways, thus putting in question the accessibility of medium-sized cities

What we want

This work package focusses on the complex revitalisation of secondary city-hinterland railway lines in order to enhance the accessibility of medium-sized cities.

What we do

  • Familiarize relevant stakeholders in the partner regions with contemporary international best practices for revitalisation of railways,
  • Implement selected pilot projects,
  • Disseminate experiences gained in the project and
  • Elaborate general recommendations for railway revitalisation.

How we do it

The objectives will be achieved by activities like:

  • International workshops, field trips, seminars,
  • 2-5 pilot projects, analysis of obstacles and success factors, regional round tables,
  • Concepts and recommendations for railway revitalisation.
